In different times and cultures, there were many traditions surrounding marriage. And only a few of them have not lost their meaning in our time. If not every couple thinks about breaking bread, then no wedding takes place without wedding rings.

There is a lot of widespread information, myths, legends, and speculations about the tradition of wearing wedding rings, but one thing remains unchanged: this tradition has existed for many centuries, regardless of how many changes the institution of marriage undergoes. In the modern world, the ring is still a symbol of boundless love and commitment, which both promise to give each other.

It is believed that wedding rings originated in ancient Egypt or ancient Greece. This is where the tradition of wearing the ring on the ring finger comes from. The ancient Greek writer Plutarch gives an interesting historical background, referring to the work of Apion "About Egypt", about why it is customary to wear rings on the ring finger: "According to legend, the ancient Greeks wore a ring on the nearest finger: on the little finger of the left hand. The same custom existed, as they say, among the Romans. The reason for this is that during dissection and opening of human bodies, according to the custom accepted in Egypt (the Greeks call this anatomy), it was established that a certain very fine nerve comes from this finger that reaches to the heart,  therefore it was considered appropriate to honor this finger as such a decoration, since it is most closely involved with the heart, which prevails in the body. The path via the left hand was slightly shorter, and in many countries it is customary to wear rings on the left hand, which, by the way, is more convenient from a practical point of view."

The circle as a symbol of an infinite connection was present in many cultures and only later took the form of a ring. Previously, ribbons, bracelets of a wide range of materials were used: leather, hemp, iron. Precious metals were then used as a symbol of the bride's innocence.

Incidentally, wearing wedding rings was only for women for a long time. Men only started wearing wedding rings in the 19th-20th centuries. According to a more romantic version, this tradition was established after the First World War. Soldiers put on the ring to remind them of their family and home in difficult times. More realistically, American jewelry manufacturers launched an active marketing campaign at the beginning of the 20th century calling on both spouses to wear rings. The idea gradually took hold and reached our days in this form.

Gold or silver: What should wedding rings be made of?

We hope that in our time, when choosing both engagement and wedding rings, you will no longer be guided by the fact that you need to emphasize your material status and that your partner does not judge the number of carats in the diamond. Yes, and diamonds are no longer a mandatory attribute. Yet the stereotype still lives on that wedding rings should be made of gold and nothing else. The most important thing about wedding rings is the symbol, not the material. Therefore, there is now a huge choice of wedding rings made of gold, silver, steel, glass and even leather. When choosing the material for wedding rings, we recommend that you consider aesthetic preferences (some people don't wear gold, others just like it) and the durability of the material itself against wear, as you will always wear the wedding rings.

Here are some tips that will hopefully help you choose:

  1. Silver is more susceptible to oxidation than gold. Over time, it fades and can become darker. But as for wedding rings, they are slightly "self-polished" in the process of daily wear. To ensure that the rings retain their original appearance for longer, you need to take care of them: regularly wipe them with a soft cloth or buy special cosmetics for care and cleaning. But not everything is as scary as it sounds. Slightly darker silver even gives a noble impression and does not darken immediately, but only after a few years. If you still want to refresh their appearance, we polish all our jewelry for free at any time, this simple procedure literally takes 5 minutes.
  2. On smooth shiny metal, whether it is gold or silver, scratches that inevitably form over time are more visible. They will be less noticeable on textured or matte rings. If you have chosen rings with a smooth shiny surface, you can cover them with a layer of rhodium.
  3. Rhodium is a rare metal from the platinum group that is characterized by high strength. It protects the surface of softer gold or silver from scratches.
  4. As wedding rings, we do not recommend gold-plated jewelry. Regardless of how durable the coating is with daily use, it will begin to wear off and must be updated.
  5. If you want rings with stone inlay, then it is better to choose small inlays with "dense", non-protruding settings. With daily use, large stones can get caught and cause discomfort.

If you choose a ring with pearl inlay, specify exactly how it is attached. Usually, pearls are attached with jewelry glue. And this method does not guarantee that the pearl will last longer than your marriage.

The design of the men's and women's rings does not have to be identical. Men usually opt for more massive ring options without inlay, while girls, on the other hand, choose thinner and more elegant models, supplemented with rhinestone inlay. All wedding rings from the sets presented by us can be combined with each other in any order, i.e. you can order wedding rings from different sets and they will match each other.
